North Texas music meeting at Dallas Public Library, Sept. 14

The next Dallas Library North Texas music meeting will be the morning of Monday, September 14! We’ll have special guest speakers discussing two timely topics:
1. Marketing and promote music organizations and programs
2. Managing organizations in difficult times, particularly making decisions about mergers or closings.
Mark your calendar! Then, watch for information in the weeks ahead regarding our speakers for this program, specifics of scheduling, and registration information.

North Texas music meetings at the Dallas Public Library provide an opportunity for area musicians and music organizations to cooperate, communicate, and share resources. Supporting arts-related organizations can be challenging in even the best of times. In difficult times such as these, musicians need more than ever to find ways to help each other fulfill their artistic missions through creative partnerships that reduce expenses and enhance their effectiveness. Partnerships are increasingly being encouraged or even required by grant-making institutions, as well.
These meetings are designed to fill two purposes. First, they provide information of interest to musicians on a wide variety of subjects, such as fund-raising, working with the media, locating music materials in libraries and archives, grant writing, understanding music copyright laws, and other topics that influence the work we do. Then, participants are encouraged to explore ways they can use this information together to share facilities and resources and to exchange knowledge and experience.
Programs are open both to individuals and to members of musical organizations of all kinds, from singers to orchestras, from classical to country. Participants may be musicians themselves, or may be involved in support positions. Those attending have included both solo and ensemble performers; K-12 and private music educators; college and university music faculty; music librarians, archivists, or staff of cultural heritage organizations; musical theater groups; staff from local music stores; board members of music organizations; members of music fraternities and support groups; music directors/staff of churches, temples, or other religious groups; music promoters and marketing personnel; arts staff from media outlets; and engineers or others from recording studios. In short, anyone with an interest in promoting the musical arts in the North Texas area is welcome to attend!

Music Legend Dave Bartholomew Rocks Old Town Mesquite every other Sat

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Dave Bartholomew is rocking old town Mesquite with music like it's never heard before. As a favor to his friend and protege, Larry "T-Byrd"
Gordon, popular Texas show band leader and husband of Balch Springs,
Texas' new "Singing Mayor", Carrie Gordon--- Mr. Bartholomew is joining
forces with T-Byrd's band (TMPL) and Mesquite's Art Greenhaw of The Light Crust
Doughboys to revitalize Old Town Mesquite into a musical destination
center, an artists' square. Every other Saturday night throughout the
summer, T-Byrd's variety revue combines with Art's Doughboys' sounds and
style which further combine with classic Dave Bartholomew hits known
'round the world like "I'm Walkin' ", "One Night (of Sin)",
"Witchcraft", "Ain't That A Shame" and more. As more historical
background, Mr. Bartholomew produced and arranged what many people claim
is the very first rock and roll record, 1949's " The Fat Man" starring
Fats Domino.

"The Best of R&B is Back, and it's every other week in Mesquite, Texas."

Performances at McWhorter-Greenhaw bldg., 105 S. Broad St., Mesquite,

Music at the Library Downtown Dallas in July

July is almost here, and it really is starting to feel like Texas summertime outside. But we have plenty of ways to help you keep cool and keep the music coming at the Dallas Public Library.

First, on Thursday, July 16, The Dallas Opera continues its Così & Koozies summer panel series. This month’s topic is "Multiculturalism: At the Heart of Moby-Dick and Madame Butterfly." Join moderator Chris Shull (Opera Now, Opera, Star-Telegram) for a lively conversation with Dallas Opera Artistic Director Jonathan Pell; Jim Falk, President and CEO of the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Ft. Worth; Dr. Stephen Dubberly of the UNT Opera program. Their discussion will include a special presentation on multicultural interactions in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. 6:30 p.m., Bradshaw Gallery, 4th Floor.

Then, on Sunday, July 19, the Sine Nomine Brass Quintet will bring their bright and lively sound to an energetic afternoon program. They may even have a surprise guest or two! 3:00 p.m., Auditorium, 1st Floor.

We’re also happy to tell you that our special exhibit, The Light Crust Doughboys: 80 Years and Still on the Air, has been extended until the end of July. This 4th floor display celebrates eighty years of The Light Crust Doughboys’ legacy. The band can trace its beginnings to 1929, when Bob Wills began his first group, the Wills Fiddle Band. New members were added, and in 1931 the name was changed to The Light Crust Doughboys when they became the on-air musical promoters of Light Crust Flour. Wills left the group in 1933 to form the Texas Playboys, but The Light Crust Doughboys continued to perform and record. Although there have been many changes in the membership over the years, today the band continues to honor their Western swing legacy. The library’s exhibit includes costumes, photos, instruments, and more illustrating the band’s long history.
Both events and the exhibit will be at the Central Library, 1515 Young Street. For more information, call the Fine Arts Division at 214-670-1643.

“Pickin’ for the Record” at Luckenbach Texas on August 23rd

. Go to www.voicesofagratefulnation.org for all of the scoop and to sign up (if you are a guitar player) to break the Guinness World Book record; AND have a fine day of music, get the t-shirt and dog tags and bragging rights. Folks who don’t play guitar are welcome to come out day of. Supports our troops!

Ultimate Songwriters Workshop Aug 1-4

Hello from the Ultimate Songwriters Workshop! Just a quick email to let you know that registration is now open, and only the first 100 songwriters who sign up will be accepted this year! This year's workshop dates will be August 1 - 4, 2009.

If you didn't get to attend last year, visit our website at www.ultimatesongwritersworkshop.com and watch the 5 minute video on the home page! This year we've added a night of tacos and jam sessions at Big Daddy'z Shack, a catered catfish dinner with all the trimmings ($10 ticket purchased separately), and the big lake party returns on the last day of the workshop. Whether you like to sit on the banks and write, or get out on the wakes and ski, the lake party is the coolest ending to one seriously fun songwriters workshop. We don't call it the Ultimate Songwriters Workshop for nothing!

We're so proud to have our hit songwriters and publishers returning again this year, and also Steve Johnson will be back to share some of his experience with you. Steve was a participant last year who found the sweet spot where, as Barbara Cloyd says, "preparation meets opportunity". After playing his song "White Crosses" for one of our publishers, Steve had his song signed to Southern Cow Publishing.

Don't let this year pass by without your chance to be heard as a songwriter! EVERY participant with a writer ticket gets to have their song heard and critiqued by Nashville industry professionals and publishers.

This isn't your typical workshop! This is a 4 day event full of fun and experiences like you've never had. Last year, after only the first 2 hour seminar, one of our participants said "Even if this was all I got with my ticket, I would feel like I got my money's worth!"

Come share the fun and excitement as you learn from the industry pros! Kick back, grab some coffee or ice cream, enjoy the fresh Ozarks air, and kick back in the Ozark Mountain Hoe-Down Music Theater as we bring Nashville to you!

Visit the website today before all spots fill... or call (870) 715-2867 for more details.

Thanks again,
Leslie Wright
