Melody Magic Workshop on June 13th in San Francisco
Jai Josefs will give a Melody Magic Workshop on Saturday, June 13th from 10:30am-3:30pm in San Francisco. Cost will be $55 in advance and $65 walk- up. Call (650) 654.3966 to register. First 12 people to sign up will be guaranteed a critique of their song. MELODY MAGIC WORKSHOP: Some melodies seem to have an almost "magical" quality to them. They're fresh, interesting, and most importantly you immediately like and remember them. In this workshop, using examples from hit songs in the pop, rock, and country idioms, Jai will demonstrate how you too can create melodies that have this effect on the listener. You will learn the specific "tricks" that great writers use to make their melodies memorable - and most importantly how you can immediately begin applying these techniques to your own writing. Jai will be giving song critiques in the afternoon part of the workshop. The critiques will have a special focus on how the principals of melody writing discussed in the morning session do or don't work in the song presented, but will also cover all aspects of the song including lyrics, chords, marketability, etc.
Song Screening, May 18 & 19, Northern California
Steven Mclintock will screen songs in San Carlos and San Francisco on Monday May 18th and Tuesday, May 19th respectively. Steven has enjoyed 30 years as a successful songwriter, He is a singer, songwriter, publisher, producer, manager, studio/label owner, and Internet entrepreneur, Steven McClintock. With more than 350 recorded songs to his credit, he has received a BMI SONGWRITER AWARD for his hit composition, "All This Time", recorded by Tiffany. SUBMIT: Cuttable songs and Self Contained artists. Steven will gladly give feedback on songs regardless of whether he can use them or not.

"GiCKR" IS FINE IN 2009
It's 2009 and the kayaks are coming again! Jump in a kayak, dance at the concert or volunteer for The Great Castell Kayak Race June 6th, 2009 to raise money to benefit the Lance Armstrong Foundation and ("gicker") GCKR . This is the seventh year of the race and it has become a hill country tradition. The Llano River is Texas' cleanest and wildest river, flowing through some of the most historic portions of central Texas. Organizers distribute bags donated by LCRA for trash clean up for all (so those who decide to mosey down the river can do a good deed). Even though this is a "race" many folks participate to help with the cause and for a nice family day. Many serious boaters do the GCKR race to practice for the Texas Safari later in the month of June.
The race begins at the 87 river bridge over the lovely Llano River on Saturday June 6th, 2009, at 8 AM and
The Llano river RV Park hosts the put in. Pre-registration fee is $40 and includes t-shirt, bandana, snacks,
free live music concert starring the Dust Devils and much more. Raffle for gift baskets $5 per ticket!
There is a free music concert all day at Riversounds at the finish line featuring Texas Songwriters in the Round, Daniel Link, the Dust Devils
and more. The race founder, Jerialice, is a musician and wanted to provide some live original Texas music at this event as an addition to the fun aspects of the fundraiser. There will be opportunities for folks to donate at the music concert which begins at 11 AM at the finish line. The music is being generously supported by "KFAN FM Texas Rebel Radio" and Mitchell Planning Group LLC to help raise as much money as possible.
This year KXAN/CW of Austin Texas is a major media sponsor and will help spread the word all over central Texas. Organizers are appreciative
to have so much support from all the media of their region. The Race is proud to announce Scott & White and Llano Memorial Health Care System, two regional medical facilities that are very involved in community efforts and the fight against cancer, as new underwriters.
The race has a new 501-c3 foundation, GCKR, in Castell where the race ends every year from it's starting point in Mason County. The first five years the beneficiary of the 12 mile race rotated until Jerialice Arsenault, founder and Director, lost her sister Judith Curtis to cancer in 2007. After that, she and her surviving sister, Janice Ramalho agreed to try to help others.
The hope of the Race is to raise awareness of needs in the rural areas and to bring together the elements for healing. GCKR will focus on writing grants in place of the yearly auction. 100% of all donations will go to the foundation in lieu of the auction. In years past, the auction raised the majority of the funds, so some changes will be happening over the next year as the board members paddle down new waters!

Texas Music Mini-Conference

On Saturday, May 30, Dallas Public Library’s Fine Arts Division will host a one-day conference on the history of Texas music.
Twelve sessions will be offered covering a wide range of performers and styles, including Stamps-Baxter and Southern Gospel music, Texas blues, rock bands from the 60s, two noted women in Texas music, the Texas International Pop Festival, jazz in Texas, the Big D Jamboree, and more. Two film screenings will be included in the day: Teen-a-Go-Go and South Dallas Pop. For details, including a complete list of topics and information about speakers, visit the library’s web site: http://dallaslibrary.org. In conjunction with the conference, from May 8 through the end of June, the library’s fourth floor will host an exhibit celebrating eighty years of The Light Crust Doughboys’ legacy. The band can trace its beginnings to 1929, when Bob Wills began his first group, the Wills Fiddle Band. New members were added, and in 1931 the name was changed to The Light Crust Doughboys when they became the on-air musical promoters of Light Crust Flour. Wills left the group in 1933 to form the Texas Playboys, but The Light Crust Doughboys continued to perform and record. Although there have been many changes in the membership over the years, today the band continues to honor their Western swing legacy. The library’s exhibit will include costumes, photos, instruments, and other items illustrating the band’s long history.

SYNC UP CONFERENCE LINKS LOUISIANA MUSICIANS TO THE GLOBAL MARKETPLACE
The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation will host its second annual conference for music industry professionals during the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell.
Sync Up: The Jazz & Heritage Talent Exchange is a series of morning conference sessions held the Friday and Saturday of both festival weekends (April 24-25 and May 1-2), from 9 a.m. to noon. Topics to be discussed include the economic climate for international music festivals, distributing music through such digital media as video games, artist development in the Internet age, new funding mechanisms like nonprofit record labels, copyright protection and more.
The Sync Up conference takes place at the Jazz & Heritage Center (1225 N. Rampart St.) — a historic building adjacent to the Foundation offices that the Foundation purchased last year and is converting into an education center.
Admission is free, but advance registration is required as seating is limited. Register online at www.jazzandheritage.org/syncup, or by calling (504) 558-6100.

WOMEX's chief executive, Gerald Seligman, will present a keynote address at Sync Up on how the music industry can adapt in a digital world. He will also a moderate panel on the international festival market during a time of economic downturn.
Sync Up is presented by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, the nonprofit organization that owns the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell, and uses the festival proceeds for year-round activities in education, economic development and cultural programming.

Festival programming includes two main outdoor performance stages, the Acoustic Café, our award-winning Singer/Songwriter Stage, the family friendly Kidz Korner, The U.S. Army Teenz Zone, strolling entertainers, buskers and acrobats, the Taste of Texas Food Garden, the City of Richardson Petting Zoo, the Art Guitar Auction, and lots of interactive displays and exhibits.

Wildflower Songwriter School
www.wildflowerfestival.com An outstanding and career changing songwriting school will be held during the Wildflower! Festival at the Marriott Residence Inn in Richardson, Texas. The school taught and hosted by Grammy winning songwriter Jon Vezner and internationally acclaimed songwriting Author/Professor Pat Pattison of the Berklee College of Music, will be held May 15-17, 2009. We invite you and any of your fellow songwriters to attend. As a member of our songwriting community, you will receive a $25 discount on the school when you apply - just note it on the application. Deep Ellum Arts Festival April 3-5, Dallas, TX
Deep Ellum is the Metroplex's most progressive and eclectic neighborhood. The Deep Ellum Arts Festival exemplifies everything that makes this area rock. The biggest weekend of the year for the Deep Ellum Entertainment District, this free-to-attend outdoor "street party" features four outdoor stages with non-stop performances by over 75 national, regional, and local original bands during this three-day festival. With more than 100 top-notch juried decorative and visual artists, muralist, the renowned Deep Ellum Pet Parade, and abundant food and drink, the Deep Ellum Arts Festival attracts a diverse audience and includes affluent art and music enthusiasts. This is an adult-oriented visual and performing arts festival - while supervised young children and teenagers are welcome, there are no planned activities for them.

It’s March people. The third month of this glorious year is finally upon us, and it can mean only one thing—RedGorilla Music Festival is just around the corner! This year’s festival is sure to please with bands like Liam & Me, AutoVaughn, Odis, JES, Fools & Horses, Oh No, Not Stereo, By All Means Necessary, Dremnt the End, Danger is My Middle Name, The Hollywood Kills, USS, Divide the Day and many more AMAZING acts.
For those of you who are new to the RedGorilla experience, the first show of each day will begin around noon, at each of our designated RedGorilla venues along 6th St. and doesn’t stop until the last sweet riff echoes off into the night—or should I say morning—air. Each day is jam packed with bands from all over the country playing their hearts out for nothing more than their love of music.
Because RedGorilla is dedicated to promoting music of all genres, via various forms of promotion, the possibilities are endless at this year’s festival. Everything from pop, to indie rock, to reggae and hip/hop can be heard at RedGorilla showcases up and down 6th St.. Company day parties, RedGorilla sponsored events, and individual label showcases are all part of the RedGorilla experience, bringing together fans, bands, and industry professionals for the sole purpose of celebrating independent music in America.
As part of this year’s festival, RedGorilla will be keeping everyone posted on the days’ events with daily blogs on both http://www.redgorillamusic.wordpress.com and http://www.miscpause.wordpress.com. Make sure to check in with us each day to get the latest news and information surrounding the festival. We’ll be announcing special guests, backstage secrets and more, so check back often because you never know what we’ll be talking about.
