10th Annual Songcrafting Seminar at Bluebird Cafe

Saturday, January 25 - Sunday, January 26

This unique and intimate gathering features two full days of lectures, workshops, publisher pitch sessions and discussions that will totally change the way you look at songwriting. If you’d like a summary of possible topics to be covered, click here.

Workshops run from 9-4:30 Saturday and 9-4 on Sunday at the Bluebird Cafe, with a break for lunch from noon to 1pm. (There are numerous restaurants nearby.) The Bluebird is set up with a nice sound system and has natural light streaming in during the day. There will be special guests each day including Odie Blackmon, Chris DuBois and Woody Bomar. Friday Concert at Douglas Corner (6 pm). Tickets: $10, free for workshop participants

Saturday Concert at 9:30 pm, Bluebird Cafe. In-the-round with Steve and special guestsDave Berg, Tom Douglas, and Julia Sinclair. Tickets: $15. This concert is a benefit for Alive Hospice.

Songs that Save: Songwriter Competition Benefitting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

The music scene in North Texas has never been hotter! We're calling all Singer-Songwriters to enter this free contest and gain exposure for their art. Have your songs heard by Nashville producers, songwriters and record label executives and raise money for the children of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. After fan and social media voting, the finalists will perform their original songs on stage on October 25, 2013 at the Arlington Music Hall in Arlington, Texas. The winner of the Songs that Save Songwriter of the Year competition that evening will go on to perform with some of Nashville's most prestigious songwriters at one of Dallas' top events of the year - the Evening Under the Stars event at the Omni Hotel Dallas on October 26, 2013.

Judges:
Robbie Patton
Robbie Patton is an English singer-songwriter. His first major exposure came in 1979 when he was selected as the opening act for a Fleetwood Mac tour. Mac member Christine McVie would go on to produce both of Patton's solo albums and played keyboards on them; Lindsey Buckingham played guitar on Patton's hit single, "Don't Give it Up", and Stevie Nicks sang on "Smiling Islands". Patton returned the favor by co-writing the hit "Hold Me", which appeared on Fleetwood Mac's 1982 album, Mirage. Patton wrote songs for Jonathan Cain and Santana later in the 1980s.

Teresa LaBarbera-Whites
Teresa LaBarbera-Whites brings decades of passion for the music business, a long view of career building, a strong work ethic, and a woman's sensibility to a rough and tumble industry. As Senior Vice President of A&R for Jive Records, she currently oversees the recording careers of Britney Spears, Pink, The Backstreet Boys, Nick Lachey and Bowling For Soup. She works daily with songwriters and producers to tailor the songs for each artist. She was also Executive Producer on Britney Spears' current album "Circus". The creator and CEO of her newly formed BellaSonic Records, Teresa's focus is the Artist and their creativity as it relates to today's commercial market. She is developing the careers of Amie Miriello, The Dares and Ry Cuming. Prior to working at Jive Records, LaBarbera-Whites discovered Destiny's Child when the young girls were 9 and 10 years old, signed them to Columbia Records and was instrumental in developing the group and making their records. She also nurtured Beyonce's solo career with the her first solo album "Dangerously In Love," which went on to win five Grammys, which also topped Billboard magazine's Top 200 and R&B Hip Hop charts.

Chris Christian
Chris Christian is a songwriter, record producer and a record label executive. His songs have been recorded by Elvis Presley, Olivia Newton-John, Natalie Cole, Sheena Easton, The Pointer Sisters, Al Jarreau, The Carpenters, Amy Grant, Patti Austin, Dionne Warwick, America, The Imperials, B.J. Thomas, B W Stevenson, Marilyn McCoo, Dan Peek, Cheryl Ladd, Jane Olivor, Sandi Patt, Ali Lohan and others. As a member of the trio of Cotton, Lloyd & Christian (put together by Mike Curb) in the early 1970s, he enjoyed two top 40 Billboard Hits on 20th Century Records. The group performed on Dick Clarks "American Bandstand" and "Midnight Special". As a solo artist he performed on "The Merv Griffin Show, Solid Gold, and was a judge on "Star Search". Christian also played guitar with Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, and the Wayne Newton band. As a record producer, he is best known for starting Amy Grant's music career. He has produced The Pointer Sisters, Patti Austin, Al Jarreau, Natalie Cole, Dallas Cowboys, Dan Peek, Debby Boone, Steve Archer, Bill Gaither, Marilyn McCoo, Eric Champion, Ali Lohan, Pat Boone and over 100 other albums

Panel Presentation: Join us on Saturday, March 9, 2013 from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm at UNT on the Square, 109 N. Elm St. Denton, TX 76201 for the Dallas Bar Association Sports & Entertainment Law Section panel presentation "Will Play for Tips: 5 Legal Tips for Musicians/Artists/Songwriters."

This introduction to legal issues in the music business panel will help you answer questions such as Who owns my song? Do I need a lawyer? How do I protect my brand? That's "fair use," right? and Can't we all just get along? Join us for a discussion covering copyright law, trademark law, business structure for the band and other music business legal basics.
